Autumn Dance

Guy Porfirio September 30, 2022

I never met a scarecrow in real life. I’m sure they’re nice people, despite the bad rap they get from Hollywood. Seems like a boring job though, hanging around corn stalks all day. Do they get time off to be with their families after a long day in the field? If you ask me, it’s a thankless job. Nothing but ears as far as the eye can see, yet no one to talk to. I’d feel a lot better if they had a life outside of their chosen field—all work and no play, and all.

The inspiration for this piece hit while I was working on the painting for my previous post. I considered adding a scarecrow to the cornfield, but decided another element in the composition would take away from the main focus. Would a scarecrow even be at the office that time of day? Do scarecrows punch out?

I had a background planned for this piece. But, the more I thought about it, the more I believed the dancing couple was more powerful on its own. It’s just a fun piece with a fun point of view.
